Don’t Go Hunting For Readers

Help readers find you and your work

Constantly trying x, y, or z to chase down eyes to read your work will not only exhaust you but also turn readers off from what you are trying to do.

In the same way that someone can tell when you are trying too hard in a conversation, readers can tell when you are trying too hard to sell your book or your blog.

Therefore, the idea here isn’t how to “sell” your book or blog but rather make yourself well-known enough for people to care.

Getting started is hard.

My competition is steep. How do I stand out from the crowd?

Well, some of the most helpful advice I’ve read regarding getting your name out there is to write consistently and add value to your work. There is an audience for almost anything, even blogs about writing like mine that are overshadowed by bigger blogs.

I used to think that I would have to spam my writing to get noticed. That never worked.

Instead of constantly promoting my older articles on LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook, I only post once a new article comes out. I add links within that article to my old work, but I don’t advertise. I don’t create clickbait or try to force someone to “check out this other article I wrote!”
